AI Video Generation Is Getting Good Enough to Worry Stock Footage Sites

The AI video generation field has moved fast enough that a comparison written even a year ago is already dated. Quality and resolution: a genuinely fragmented leaderboard

Sora 2 leads on cinematic quality and realistic motion, the choice for professional ads or short films where visual fidelity matters most, though its maximum resolution tops out at 1080p. Google's Veo 3 offers up to 4K resolution (the highest currently available) while Kling matches that on its premium tier and drops to 1080p on standard. Runway has taken a different position entirely: rather than leading on any single quality metric, Gen-4 (and its Gen-4.5 update) offers what's widely regarded as the best combination of quality, creative control, and global accessibility, plus an in-app editor for assembling and refining generated clips rather than just producing them in isolation.

The cost gap is larger than the quality gap

Cost differences across these tools are substantial enough to be a primary selection factor on their own: a 30-second Sora 2 video via API runs around $22.50. Roughly five times the cost of a comparable Veo 3.1 fast-mode generation. Where the generic-footage substitution is real

For short, non-narrative b-roll (a city skyline, hands typing, an abstract data visualization) current-generation tools across this whole field are now genuinely competitive with licensing a stock clip, and often faster. This is a real, measurable shift specifically concentrated in the generic, low-differentiation footage segment stock libraries built their catalogs around, not a broader claim that AI video has displaced professional production generally.

Where narrative continuity remains the unsolved problem

Kling leads specifically on human motion quality but carries real geographic and language accessibility barriers for Western creators. More fundamentally, every tool in this comparison still struggles with the same underlying issue: maintaining a consistent character or subject across multiple shots and a longer sequence.
